ScienceOpen is excited to announce that it now includes books and book chapters to give users a richer discovery experience and to support academic publishers with book sales. Embedded within an interactive environment of nearly 60 million article records, this new feature highlights books and chapters within search results and ScienceOpen’s unique Collections infrastructure. Researchers can now add book publications to their profiles and include books and chapters in their ScienceOpen Collections. Publishers will be able to promote and sell their open access and copyrighted works within a broad, interdisciplinary research context.

ScienceOpen provides innovative resources and solutions for readers, researchers and publishers to enjoy both journal and book content – all in one place! It also means that ScienceOpen’s innovative solutions, such as post-publication peer review or topical Collections, can now include all publication types, from preprints to journal articles and books.

Books and journals – all in one place!

Post-publication peer review gives an opportunity for researchers to share and comment content that has already been published because research does not end after publication. Embedding books and books chapters in this system will provide a scientific communication channel in areas of knowledge that rely primarily on book content, such as humanities and social sciences.

A ScienceOpen Collection is a themed selection of publications from a variety of sources curated by researchers or publishers. By highlighting only the most relevant, hand-selected research, both researchers and publishers can better communicate science to peers and laypeople. Collection curation is undoubtedly one of the best ways to filter research and make it easily accessible. With addition of books and book chapters to ScienceOpen, all collection curators will have a lot of room to work and experiment with scholarly information.

We are making it easier to acquire physical copies of books you like!

Authors can add a book cover, summary or keywords to their publications to increase their visibility within the platform. Linked citations, references, authors and keywords deeply connect the books to other content within the discovery environment, building a contextual cloud that encourages further exploration. For every piece of book content, interested readers are directed to the version of record on the publisher website. For those who, despite living in the digital era, wish to have a good old-fashioned hard copy of a book that they like, we have added a ‘Buy button’ for every book.

Simply put, books on ScienceOpen is great news for everyone!

For too long books and journal articles have been searchable in completely different databases. ScienceOpen is aiming for a unified approach to scholarly discovery. – Dr. Stephanie Dawson, ScienceOpen CEO

The Collection “Climate Change Open Access” is a great example of how powerful the new book feature can be! Over 16 thousand open access articles on one of the most pressing challenges of our time are now joined by dozens of open access book titles and chapters from publishers such as Springer, MIT Press or Routledge. For those interested in environmental issues, the Collection offers lots of resources from a quick article reference to a longer read.

Within the featured ScienceOpen Collection “IET: Power Engineeringsix book titles on the subject ranging from wind and solar energy to energy storage and power distribution have been included. Books and chapters are highlighted where available in all search results. Books and chapters are displayed in relationship to one another for easy browsing.

Integrative and unified discover environment on ScienceOpen

ScienceOpen can also provide publisher landing pages for an entire portfolio such as the open access books of the University of Huddersfield Press and the Carl Grossman Verlag. Integration of research is important because communication channels of scholarly information are heterogeneous and vary from field to field. For instance, book publications are particularly important in the humanities and social sciences. Moreover, being able to access diverse publication types in one place makes it easier to work across many fields of knowledge. Therefore, by adding books to the platform, ScienceOpen both reaches out to new fields and encourages more interdisciplinarity.

Articles and books within one discovery environment mark an important step towards accessible and all-inclusive science. CEO of ScienceOpen, Dr. Stephanie Dawson, said:

“This new feature is a response to users and publishers seeking to highlight book content within their topical ScienceOpen Collections. Already 136 books and chapters have been added to researcher-edited Collections. We are pleased therefore to be able to open up this feature to academic publishers to promote and sell their academic book titles. For too long books and journal articles have been searchable in completely different databases. ScienceOpen is aiming for a unified approach to scholarly discovery.”

The academic book market is undergoing rapid changes with the move to digital and new open access models. By integrating book discovery into the platform, ScienceOpen strives to provide researchers with more information and ways to promote their research, and publishers with new marketing and sales channels for their book portfolios.
