Un-siloing Book and Journal Content

We are excited to announce that Hogrefe, the leading scientific publisher for psychology, psychiatry, and mental health in Europe, has worked with us to add book records to their collections on ScienceOpen. By combining books and journal article records in collections, ScienceOpen works as a platform to “un-silo” publishers’ content. Hogrefe has previously created ten collections on ScienceOpen to feature their journals’ content. These collections include eight thematic collections on topics such as medicine, nursing, and psychology, a Covid-19 collection, and a universal Collection comprising over 17,000 publications. Bringing together book and journal content around similar topics embedded in ScienceOpen’s interactive search platform gives a new way for readers to interact with and discover research that’s relevant for them!

Explore Hogrefe Books on ScienceOpen

The books added to the platform are publications in the fields of psychology, nursing, and medicine in English and German. Below, we have listed five of the new titles for you to explore:

• Clinical Handbook of Psychotropic Drugs
• Behavior and Medicine
• Lehrbuch Organisationspsychologie
• Pflegewissenschaft 2: Lehr und Arbeitsbuch zur Einführung in die Methoden der Pflegeforschung
• Internistische Grundlagen in Viszeraler Chirurgie und Medizin: Zusammenhänge kennen und Befunde richtig interpretieren

You can find all of the books by filtering for books in ‘Content Type’ and for ‘Hogrefe’ as the publisher name. Alternatively, go straight to the collections, Hogrefe Pflege, Medicine, or Psychology and filter for books. By adding book content to Hogrefe’s collections, ScienceOpen has provided a dynamic platform to combine Hogrefe’s book and journal content around similar topics in psychology and medicine.

About implementing book data

As scientific literature has shifted from paper to online, journals have made a cleaner transition than books technically speaking, for example like in the consistency of metadata formats. Thus, as an aggregator, ScienceOpen has been working diligently to build systems that can handle all the various formats of book metadata. In our partnership with Hogrefe to add book content to their collections, we provided technical services such as fixing abstract formatting and linking to the DOI at the Hogrefe eLibrary, the research and institutional ebook platform. We also added a ‘Buy Book’ button to each book record which leads directly to the web shop of the publisher.
