ScienceOpen’s Monthly Digest – September 2023
September was a month dedicated to Open Peer Review at ScienceOpen. We just celebrated Peer Review Week and the whole month of September by promoting our solutions, innovation and infrastructure for open peer review and open science.
We also witnessed our collections growing bigger and our network slowly approaching the 90 million publications milestone. Today we will briefly recap some of the additions and announcements from September.
New additions to our network
In September our network saw the addition of new interdisciplinary content addressing environmental issues, the impact of the environment and climate change in our societies, and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Environment and Society Collection features multidisciplinary research on ScienceOpen, highlighting heavily discussed topics in scholarly circles around the world and the research results of an international project that is aiming to rethink the interactions of environments and societies from a global perspective.
The collection is a joint collaboration between Rachel Carson Center and The White Horse Press, which have worked closely together for some years now, promoting and supporting each other’s complementary publication programs.
Explore the latest articles in the collection:
- Building a Puerto Rico ‘Better than the One We Lost’: Hurricane San Felipe II and the Puerto Rican New Deal
- The Equestrian Suburb of Latine Los Angeles
- River Rights at Rockhampton (a Rhetoric)
- The Struggle for Air: Mining, Dust, and Death on the South African Rand
- Irritations and Unforeseen Consequences of the Urban: Debating Natures, Politics and Timescapes
September is an important month for raising awareness about mental health and well-being. Since 2003, September 10th has been designated as World Suicide Prevention Day, and many countries dedicate the weeks following or the entire month of September to suicide prevention and mental well-being.
To mark topics related to mental health and well-being, we promoted on our blog publishers and collections on ScienceOpen that devote a significant amount of scholarly work to mental health studies.
With collections and research from Hogrefe, Psychology by AKJournals, JMIR Publications, Emerald: Healthier Lives, Chinese Journal of School Health and other publishers on our network, scholars can explore mental health topics in a multidisciplinary scholarly environment, featuring over 89 million publications of all sorts.

Launching the Drug Repurposing Central
Our digital infrastructure offers a wide range of publishing solutions that cover various publishing needs and are tailored to publishers of all sizes. The full potential of our infrastructure can be discovered in big publishing project implementations like that of Drug Repurposing Central.
Drug Repurposing Central, is the go-to publishing portal for researchers in drug repurposing, network medicine, precision healthcare, and other related disciplines. It is currently accepting and featuring preprints, journal articles, conference abstracts, reports and books, facilitating an open discussion in a unique open review environment powered by ScienceOpen’s discovery infrastructure and digital innovation.
Created by REPO4EU, a Horizon Europe project aimed at establishing a European Platform for Drug Repurposing with global reach, the open science portal offers the drug repurposing community a wide range of options, all free of charge to read and publish. Drug Repurposing Central aims to go beyond Open Access publishing with an Open Science approach that maximizes the interoperability of research outputs in a digital context, through the consistent use of persistent identifiers and XML standards.
Explore the various collections of the publishing central, where you can now submit preprints and articles on drug repurposing, as well as abstracts for the upcoming RExPO Conference.
