Author summaries: Increase discoverability with ScienceOpen

Author summaries: Increase discoverability with ScienceOpen

At ScienceOpen, we recognize that the challenge is not just conducting and publishing groundbreaking research but also ensuring that it is accessible to other researchers and understandable to a broader audience. With our author summary feature, we make it possible for researchers to increase the discoverability of their work, share their findings with a lay audience, facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration, boost search engine visibility of their research, and increase the citability of their findings.

Connecting with different audiences

Plain Language Summaries (PLS) are beneficial to both laypeople and fellow researchers.

Not everyone navigating through scientific articles has a scientific background. Author summaries in plain language serve as a concise and easily digestible overview, allowing the reader to grasp the core concepts and implications of a study without getting lost in technical details. This engagement fosters a sense of inclusivity, making scientific knowledge more approachable and relevant to a broader audience.

However, lay summaries in plain language are not the only way to broaden the reach of publications. Oftentimes studies have a rather locally based focus such as linguistic or cultural analyses done within a limited language community. Mainly, findings are published in dominant languages such as English. With author summaries, one can easily add an abstract translated into any other language or dialect to bring back the findings and make them accessible to the respective communities. Multilingual author summaries help bring your research to different communities around the world and can support Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI).

Similarly, an author summary can be useful to fellow scientists who are interested in a particular topic but come from another discipline. Researchers often find themselves exploring beyond the boundaries of their own scientific fields. Author summaries act as a gateway for interdisciplinary collaboration by presenting complex findings in a language that is accessible to experts from various backgrounds. The result is not only enhanced discoverability of research to a wider audience but also the facilitation of cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration

Increasing search engine visibility

While author summaries increase discoverability by human readers, they can also serve as a beacon for search engines like Google. By using plain language and relevant keywords, authors can increase the chances of articles appearing in search results, guiding interested users directly to the content they’re looking for.
