New books from AEUP members on ScienceOpen

The Association of European University Presses (AEUP) is helping its members lay the groundwork for an open future by providing support and guidance for best practices in the digital dissemination of book metadata. The launch and successful implementation of the AEUP book catalogue on ScienceOpen based on Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) from Crossref or Datacite stands out as one of our most significant accomplishments of the past year.

The AEUP is an organization for university presses across Europe that helps members build stronger relationships with one another, collaborate and share knowledge to achieve common goals, and jointly address important issues in a rapidly changing publishing environment. Currently, the AEUP has 50 members from 18 countries. Last year, ScienceOpen and the AEUP joined forces to increase the visibility of scholarly book content. By providing cutting-edge indexing and discovery services, ScienceOpen supports AEUP’s mission of sharing scientific research and knowledge about all aspects of scholarly publishing and facilitating communication between AEUP members and scholarly circles in Europe and beyond.

The BookMetaHub as a tool for university presses

AEUP members who already have Crossref DOIs for their books and chapters can set up an automated feed to update the catalogue whenever a new title is published. For those who are still in the process of adding DOIs to their book publishing workflows, ScienceOpen offers a metadata platform the BookMetaHub, to create Crossref-ready XML files from the publisher’s ONIX feeds.

Going beyond the initial DOI and related metadata, publishers can also make use of a broad variety of DIY tools as part of the AEUP project to enrich their book records or book additional services for extra support under special member rates. Through the BookMetaHub environment, member presses and book publishers can import their DOI- or ONIX-based metadata for further enrichment via an intuitive input user interface to fill in any gaps and export the richer records directly to Crossref and other outlets. Those richer records will then be displayed in the AEUP catalogue for more visibility and discoverability, all updated according to current best practice and FAIR data recommendations. Member Presses are also invited to make use of ScienceOpen’s wide array of discovery and promotional tools that help showcase content from AEUP members both within the broader context of our network’s 92+ million publication records on our platform and beyond.

AEUP members can further showcase their book content within the catalogue and beyond with a Collection on the ScienceOpen platform. With a Collection, the publisher name will be highlighted in the search menus and as a related content banner on all relevant records in the database. Each Collection provides a wealth of usage metrics including the geolocation of readers around the world, multilingual options, an interactive interface for book reviews and recommendations as well as space for do-it-yourself ad banners on every record. Explore book collections by AEUP members such as Amsterdam University Press, Leiden University Press, Leuven University Press, or University of Westminster Press.

Book publishing on ScienceOpen

Our list of books extends further with smaller publishing houses, individual authors and books from research initiatives that enrich our network and give the opportunity to scholars from different disciplines to have all this scholarship available in one place.

We are happy to see the number of books and book chapter titles grow every month. Are you attending London Book Fair this year and want to learn more about our book hosting and discovery services?
