ScienceOpen’s Peer Review Management Environment

ScienceOpen’s Peer Review Management Environment

ScienceOpen offers comprehensive peer review management tools built into our infrastructure, supporting both traditional blinded peer review and open, post-publication review. Some key features include:

  • Manuscript Submission and Dashboard: An intuitive dashboard helps editors manage the review process before and after publication, with branded notifications for faster turnaround times.
  • Open Review and Versioning: Editors can choose between blinded and open review processes. The platform supports open, post-publication peer review, where reviews are linked to reviewers’ identities and ORCID profiles, and each review receives a citable Crossref DOI. Authors can reply to reviews, contributing to more transparent discussions. Review histories and metrics for article versions are fully visible.
  • Flexible Publishing Workflows: Publishers can opt for workflows including pre-print posting or traditional final peer-reviewed versions in XML and PDF.

Navigating the peer review system: How does it work?

Navigating the peer review system on ScienceOpen is straightforward and efficient. Below, we will discuss the steps necessary for managing the review process on our platform:

Inviting Reviewers

ScienceOpen simplifies reviewer invitations within its discovery environment. To begin the peer review process, editors can simply click “Review” on an article page and select “Invite someone to review.”

There are several options when it comes to finding reviewers: (1) editors can invite potential reviewers directly from the ScienceOpen database, (2) editors can search for similar articles and their relevant authors, or (3) editors can invite specific reviewers via email. Multiple invitations can be sent simultaneously, and all invitations are recorded in the peer review dashboard and can be viewed by clicking the number in the “Reviewers invited” column.

Tracking Manuscript Submission

Editors can easily track manuscript submissions. The peer review tasks table provides a summary of submissions, and the peer review dashboard offers one-click access to individual submissions.

Monitoring Reviewer Reports

Reviewer reports are accessible on the manuscript page. In the open peer review system, reviews and reviewers are publicly available, while in single-blind reviews, all reviewers are anonymized.

Editorial Decisions Management

Available upon request, ScienceOpen provides plagiarism/similarity reports, as well as scientific rigor checks, e.g. from SciScore

Following the peer review process, editors can make publishing decisions using buttons to either publish, send back for revision, decline or withdraw the submission.

Transparency, Efficiency, and Collaboration

ScienceOpen’s peer review management environment upholds transparency, efficiency, and collaboration in academic publishing. The intuitive, easy-to-use tools and open post-publication review streamline review processes and foster deeper scientific discussions.  ScienceOpen simplifies the entire peer review process, benefiting editors, reviewers, and authors, and advancing the integrity and quality of research.
