In these free workshops we will share our joint vision for the future of scholarly communication and our experience in realizing and communicating this vision. Throughout the workshop we will introduce UCL Press’ goals for a university-led open publishing system, ScienceOpen’s vision for open platform publishing models, as well as give a live demonstration of the publishing technology, the editorial workflow and the technical solutions we developed together on the way.

Open science is not only about paywalls – it is also about guaranteeing that everybody across the globe can freely and fairly participate in disseminating knowledge. Chinese science is on the rise – an estimated one-third of the worldwide scientific output in 2016 was published in China (Xie & Freeman, 2019). However, Chinese publications face considerable challenges, both structural and cultural, when it comes to communicating science to non-Chinese communities. The mission of ScienceOpen is to remove these obstacles and open Chinese research to a wider audience. To make this happen, ScienceOpen partners with several institutions from China to host and represent their content within its open research network and to help make it easily discoverable in the digital space. In the ScienceOpen database you can find thousands of Chinese research articles. Would you like to get to know the most relevant papers but do not know where to start? Then our featured and non-featured Collections are the right go-to resource! Those article selections integrate handpicked papers highlighting state-of-the-art science. They are a perfect point of departure for anyone wishing to explore new strands of research. As there’s over a dozen (!) Collections from Chinese researchers, we thought we would give you a walk-through and introduce the Collections with which you can begin your adventure!
Easiest way to make a book discoverable? Equip its chapters with unique DOIs!
In order to support this conclusion, we did some number crunching on ScienceOpen. Since launching our expanded indexing services in November 2019, ScienceOpen has tracked citations to over 820,000 books and book chapters, giving us plenty of data to work with. Out of the total amount of book content, book chapters represent around 80%. Such a strong presence on the ScienceOpen platform is not a coincidence – book chapters equipped with DOIs as persistent identifiers are more easily trackable and thus become a key tool in research discovery of book publications. As researchers commonly use publication lists of books and articles as a discovery tool, chapter-level DOIs make more granular information easier to find and cite.

The Microbiology Society, a leading organisation for research in microbes with over 10,000 publications indexed on ScienceOpen, decided to address this challenge and also highlight the vital role of learned societies in working together towards a sustainable future. The Society’s one-of-a-kind initiative culminated in the creation of the ScienceOpen Collection ‘A Sustainable Future’. This selection of research goes beyond the scope of microbiology and integrates contributions from nine scholarly organisations across topics such as ecology, medicine, social policy and welfare, environmental studies, and biochemistry. Offering this kind of unified learning experience is unprecedented, but this is not the only thing that makes this Collection unique!

ScienceOpen is pleased to announce a new collaboration with the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to showcase the new interdisciplinary journal, AWWA Water Science (AWS), which publishes original, peer-reviewed research on the science, engineering, and social aspects of water. Thanks to ScienceOpen’s unique infrastructure, authors who publish their research in AWS will have enhanced discoverability as well as access to a suite of features, such as community curation, article reviews, comments, and recommendations, all of which benefit the whole scientific community by facilitating public engagement with scholarly research.
Open science is not only about free PDFs! ScienceOpen has, therefore, reorganized its notifications to give every user more options and more flexibility to aggregate notification streams. ScienceOpen notifications let you stay informed of news from ScienceOpen, activity in the collections you follow and other users’ interactions with your ScienceOpen profile. You can also follow the statistics related to your publications or curated collections. In this recent update, the platform was modified both to personalize email preferences and to provide a clear overview of all notifications via the ScienceOpen portal.
