New Open Access Journal Collection: Genes & Diseases
We are proud to introduce the newest Journal Collection on the platform: an elite STEM journal from China, Genes & Diseases. This journal was selected in 2019 as a top journal to join China’s STEM Journal Excellence Action Plan.
China’s Journal Excellence Action Plan
In 2019, the China STEM Journal Excellence Action Plan was jointly implemented by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the General Administration of Press and Publication, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. This initiative was started to improve the quality of top scientific journals in China to bring them to world standards. It’s a huge national project of high importance, consisting of seven sub-projects, including leading journals, key journals, echelon journals, high starting point journals, clustering pilots, international digital publishing service platforms, and high-level journal personnel. 285 journals were selected to receive funding from the 2019 China STEM Journal Excellence Action Plan. Genes & Diseases was selected as one of these journals in the ‘high starting point journals’ category. All the selected journals are considered highly influential in their respective fields. This national project is of the highest level and has huge support in China. Thus, we are thrilled to have Genes & Diseases join the platform in a featured Collection.

The New Partnership
Amsterdam University Press has strategically partnered with ScienceOpen to enrich its metadata and feature its scholarly books on ScienceOpen’s interactive search and discovery platform. ScienceOpen has provided expert technical support with the generation of rich, machine-readable metadata and assigning and depositing Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to Crossref. By partnering with ScienceOpen, Amsterdam University Press (AUP) can now dedicate more of its focus to the editing aspects of publishing—leaving the technical responsibilities to ScienceOpen’s Metadata Technical Hub.

A New Partnership
We are excited to announce our new partnership with the University of Maribor Press (UMP) to provide them with promotional and technical services for their publications. We have begun by indexing two of its prestigious Law Journals—Lexonomica: Journal of Law and Economics and Medicine, Law and Society—and the University of Maribor Press Books in featured collections. Additionally, we have set up a University of Maribor Press Super Collection. These collections place UMP’s publications within the ever-growing ScienceOpen database of over 70 million academic records. We have also planned that ScienceOpen will provide substantial technical services to UMP, such as book DOI deposit to Crossref, metadata enhancement, and reporting new content from the journals to Dimensions, DOAJ, and Crossref.

Perhaps you have had the experience, like I have, of a university librarian demonstrating to your class how to use the search engines of various academic databases. Then you would know that a search engine can be quite nuanced, often with an ‘Advanced Search’ feature hidden away at the top corner of the homepage, reserved only for those who are “trained” by their university librarian to know to look for it, let alone use it!
The ScienceOpen Search Engine Upgrade
On the ScienceOpen platform, the search engine that powers our discovery database is unique in that it is front and center on each new search—without any barricades, inviting all users to tinker with and explore content with it. Excitingly, the ScienceOpen technical team has recently upgraded the search functionalities on the site to be even more advanced and user-friendly!
This upgrade has some really useful features, and I would like to guide you through the new search options in this post. So, sit back and enjoy this demonstration of the new functions with an example I have chosen on the topic, penguins and climate change.

March 22nd – UN Recognized World Water Day
Since 1993, March 22nd has been designated World Water Day to bring awareness to the importance of fresh water. It goes without saying that access to safe drinking water is essential for survival, good health, sanitation, and quality of life. Access to fresh water is also clearly a concern as average global temperatures rise. Fresh water is predicted to become scarce in some areas of the world while more extreme flooding seasons are expected in others. Presently, the United Nations reports that 1 in 3 people do not have access to safe drinking water and estimates that by 2050 up to 5.7 billion people could be living in areas where water is scarce for at least one month a year. Thus, ensuring access to fresh water to everyone is critically important and will only become more difficult in the wake of global warming.
