Publisher Collections of coronavirus research highlighted on ScienceOpen

File:Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.jpg - Wikipedia

The fast-paced research that we need to quickly understand the novel coronavirus disease COVID-19 and effectively find treatments has changed how scientists are communicating their results. Many researchers are posting their findings as preprints to speed up data sharing, rather than waiting for peer review and publication in an academic journal. But publishers are also stepping up and providing expedited processes to make peer reviewed information available as fast as possible, collecting all relevant publications together and making those freely accessible during this crisis.

ScienceOpen features new Access Microbiology journal by the Microbiology Society

The Microbiology Society has launched a second journal portal on ScienceOpen. The recent release highlights the Society’s new Gold Open Access journal, Access Microbiology, which redefines the idea of ‘high impact’ research by emphasizing great value of methodologically sound and rigorous research for the broader scientific community.

From early career researchers for early careeer researchers

Access Microbiology is an exciting journal for the Microbiology Society, built for and led by early career researchers and with the goal of ensuring that valuable research outputs are published, whether they are conference posters, negative results, or replication studies. We’ve been working with ScienceOpen for some time, initially for Microbial Genomics, and we know that making the work published in Access Microbiology more visible by showcasing it through ScienceOpen is a clear benefit to our authors.

Join UCL Press and ScienceOpen for workshops to explore opportunities around open publishing models for your university press.

Over the last year UCL Press and ScienceOpen collaborated on the development of an open publishing platform, UCL Open, and the launch of its first multi-disciplinary journal, UCL Open: Environment.

Open peer review, editorial moderation, community engagement, transparent processes, and rich metadata feeds are all essential features of the UCL Open platform. The ScienceOpen discovery technology and a unique research-driven curation architecture powers the ability to embed broad scope publishing into the whole of research outputs while nourishing niche topical communities.

Open Publishing Models for University Presses

In these free workshops we will share our joint vision for the future of scholarly communication and our experience in realizing and communicating this vision. Throughout the workshop we will introduce UCL Press’ goals for a university-led open publishing system, ScienceOpen’s vision for open platform publishing models, as well as give a live demonstration of the publishing technology, the editorial workflow and the technical solutions we developed together on the way.

If you are a university or society press, or simply interested in the future of university publishing, then register for free and learn more about a model of platform publishing that:
  • enables rapid, transparent and open communication of research results,
  • supports student journals, and
  • provides easy and inexpensive publications for university-run conferences

Book chapter DOIs emerge as a new key tool in research discovery

Easiest way to make a book discoverable? Equip its chapters with unique DOIs!

In order to support this conclusion, we did some number crunching on ScienceOpen. Since launching our expanded indexing services in November 2019, ScienceOpen has tracked citations to over 820,000 books and book chapters, giving us plenty of data to work with. Out of the total amount of book content, book chapters represent around 80%. Such a strong presence on the ScienceOpen platform is not a coincidence – book chapters equipped with DOIs as persistent identifiers are more easily trackable and thus become a key tool in research discovery of book publications. As researchers commonly use publication lists of books and articles as a discovery tool, chapter-level DOIs make more granular information easier to find and cite.
