Easiest way to make a book discoverable? Equip its chapters with unique DOIs!
In order to support this conclusion, we did some number crunching on ScienceOpen. Since launching our expanded indexing services in November 2019, ScienceOpen has tracked citations to over 820,000 books and book chapters, giving us plenty of data to work with. Out of the total amount of book content, book chapters represent around 80%. Such a strong presence on the ScienceOpen platform is not a coincidence – book chapters equipped with DOIs as persistent identifiers are more easily trackable and thus become a key tool in research discovery of book publications. As researchers commonly use publication lists of books and articles as a discovery tool, chapter-level DOIs make more granular information easier to find and cite.
These journals fulfil the double challenge of publishing high-quality Open Access research while charging no fees (APCs) to their authors. As such, they provide significant contributions to advancing open scholarship as well as a more democratic science from month to month.
To help these valuable contributions to the scholarly record to become more visible, we offer our winners a Featured Collection for one year for free. Collections are a specialized and customized promotional service to increase the visibility of selected journals within our discovery platform, also used to track and measure usage of research articles.

We noticed the call when we were uploading the content of our most recent issue to DOAJ. To be completely honest, at first glance we were not sure about how our journal would find its place among your content -most of the indexed journals are from hard science fields-, but the interface looked very appealing, user-friendly, and there were a lot of additional options not seen on competitors’ services. We are constantly looking for new opportunities to reach toward international audiences, and, as someone who can already speak from experience, ScienceOpen seems to be in every respect an intelligent tool capable to help us achieve this goal.

ScienceOpen for publishers and editors
Our new platform provides an invaluable service for publishers and editors. We provide aggregate metrics for re-use, including the number of readers on our platform and the summed Altmetric score. As you can see in the example below for BioMed Central, these numbers can be used to look at how well you’re competing with other publishers, as well as how your content is being read and re-used by researchers. Content on the site is aggregated through PubMed Central, SciELO, ORCID and arXiv or added via reference analysis with a DOI metadata check with Crossref. Or publishers can work directly with us to add their content to the site for a fee. We now offer extra features like a “read” button link back to the publisher version of record. We are happy to index content of all license types.
