ScienceOpen features humanities and social sciences research

Although our name may suggest a focus on the physical and natural sciences, ScienceOpen works with all types of scholarly publishers. Many of our partners are publishing in the fields of humanities and social sciences (HSS), and so ScienceOpen is a great resource for research in these areas in addition to STEM subjects. In this post, we are pleased to highlight some very interesting and recently added HSS content and Collections on the platform.

Introducing the Journal of Urban Archaeology

Urban societies have created a remarkable and immense archaeological record, and the material yielded from urban sites can reveal a lot of different information about cultural constructions, environmental issues, social evolution, and more. Up to now, however, this material has often been discussed within the framework of different regional and topical approaches rather than within its own field. The Journal of Urban Archaeology (JUA), published by Brepols, is the first journal to recognize urban archaeology as a field within its own right and is intended to provide an intellectual forum for researchers working on the archaeology of urban societies. The Journal of Urban Archaeology is now discoverable on ScienceOpen in a unique Featured Collection, expanding ScienceOpen and Brepols Publishers’ partnership.

The New Education Journals published by UCL Press

In the last several months, ScienceOpen has welcomed four education and social science journals based at the UCL Institute of Education and published by UCL Press: the Film Education Journal, London Research of Education, International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning, and Research for All. The History Education Research Journal (HERJ) is the fifth and final journal of this series to be presented alongside its new issue 17(2), which is out today! All of these education journals are now hosted on ScienceOpen where they are freely accessible and supported by our expert metadata and technology services.  

An introduction to the Trivent Medieval Collection

Adding to the diverse humanities and social science content on ScienceOpen, our most recent project with Trivent Publishing is now available! Together, we have launched a featured collection that showcases the books from Trivent Medieval. Trivent Medieval is a growing imprint, currently holding ten book series on varied historical subjects: art history, magic and witchcraft, Mediterranean studies, equestrian history, Byzantine history, the history of the Carolingian Empire, as well as gender, and medievalism. We are very excited to support this excellent collection of medieval history research by Trivent Publishers. The integration of the Trivent Medieval Collection into the ScienceOpen discovery platform further expands our reach beyond the natural sciences and will increase the dissemination of Trivent books.  

A colorful addition to our Humanities section: Magnificat Cultura i Literatura Medievals, an open-access, double-blind peer-reviewed yearbook on medieval culture and literature as well as digital humanities is now available on ScienceOpen. Distinguishing features are:

• The multilingual character of the journal since it accepts works in numerous languages. Hitherto the majority of articles were written in English, Spanish and Catalan, but all abstracts are available in English.

• Due to its digital format and annual publication frequency the journal favors articles longer than the usual standard (the longest one is a 267 page thorough study from Jaume J. Chiner Gimeno updating the biographical records of the writer Joan Roís de Corella (1435-1497)). This is especially beneficial in the case of such a textology & philology oriented field as medieval studies, where in many cases space constraints impede the sharing of authentic texts or data in full length. Eliminating this obstacle, the journal aims to give forth longer texts, manuscripts and literary texts, critical editions or biographical data which are well-deserved to be openly published.

• The journal puts special emphasis on medievalism and the maintenance of medieval heritage by means of facilitating exchange on digitization projects.

• Magnificat CLM is strongly committed to Open Access values and collaboration for boundless research.

The high quality of articles as well as meticulous editing is guaranteed by the prestigious editorial team from the Universitat de València.

The third volume is a hot release from 9 December. Diving into the issue, you can read about a Renaissance love story, on the early reception of Dante in Catalan culture, on the intriguing epigraphic inscriptions of Lara (of the famous infantes), on a critical edition of several mythological Corellan proses and finally, on the importance of ekphrasis in Ramon Llull’s writings.
